Why can't I install the Skype app on my Nokia Lumia 635?

Yes, I did try to install it via WiFi. Makes no difference. The phone simply refuses to download ANY app. It gives various excuses: can't connect to the store right now, retry all, etc.
This is my first smartphone, btw, and it's a piece of garbage. If this is how all smartphones are, I'm going back to my old phone. I've had nothing but bad experiences on this crap that Millennials are so obsessed with.
