Nokia lumia 930 mic not working?

I have had a hand me down nokia lumia phone for a while now and noticed that the microphone doesn t work when I am trying to record or use speaker phone. At first I thought it was just a problem with my microphone and it needed replacing but if I speak to Cortana through the microphone it picks up my voice? I think its a system error but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
