Can I put a contract sim into a pay and go handset?

I had a Nokia Lumia 635 which got stolen within the first year on my contract. O2 supplied me with a new sim with the same contract and phone number as before and I am looking for a new phone. I m interested in getting a Sony E4G but I wanted to get a pay as you go handset as then I can take out the sim and put in my contracted sim. Will this work?
