What's up with my phone battery?

When I plugged in my Nokia to charge it, it had a notification saying that it was going to charge slow as if I had a different charger in - though I didn't. Also, if I use my phone whilst it's charging, it doesn't charge. Is this because it's overheated or the phone just needs a break for a while?
